Tom, & Kay, & Mama Mia

Well, I thought I was doing my friend Tom and his girlfriend Kay a big favor when I told them that they had to see the new movie Mama Mia starring Meryl Streep, Pierce Brosnan, and the infectious music of Abba.

My wife Shelley, who rarely goes to the movies, was talking about going for 2 weeks. I looked forward to it too. In the right mood, I enjoy Abba a lot. And I loved the movie. I didn't lose interest for a minute. I thought it was a great musical and I'd see it again. The music was great, the visuals of Greece were stunning, and listening to Meryl and Pierce sing has to be experienced to be believed. Delightfully awful. They were perfect. My wife can't wait to get the dvd for the house.

So what was Tom's opinion? He thought it was a chick flick. (That's my sanitized translation of what he really said.) He wanted to walk out. Even Kay didn't like most of it. Tom said she only got into it at the end.

And how did I come to learn this unfortunate information? Well, I was excited and I wanted to call him early the next day expecting him to rave about it and thank me over and over, but he called first. He let the air out of my balloon fast.

You have to understand that I sidetracked Tom and Kay from the movie they were really going to see, The Mummy. For those two you can't have too many explosions, gunfights, and car chases. They LOVE action. So I felt like crap!

I was physically exhausted for a couple of days (so I really couldn't think straight.) and I couldn't figure out how I was going to make this thing right. I knew I had to do something. Then it dawned on me. I'd take them both out on a date to see, of course, THE MUMMY! It was the solution to so many questions. 

Since my Shelley hates actions movies, how would I ever see The Mummy?

How could I make up for Tom & Kay missing seeing a movie they were looking forward to?

How could I make up for them wasting a weekend afternoon?

How could I regain my credibility?

So that's my plan for next weekend. I'll ask the two of them out on a real traditional movie date; buttered popcorn, Goobers, free tickets, and a ride over. I hope they say yes.

Maybe they'll forgive me, at least for a couple of hours.

I feel compelled to offer a retort to our dear friend Mark. Mark, it's only entertainment! We're both ok with musicals, but this one should be rated for 13 year old girls ONLY. It is a teenager's dream story. So please have no bad feelings over a silly movie. But we do look forward to your movie date offer for the week-end! Your bestest friends, Tom and Kay
